7 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Sober Living Home

Not all sober living homes are created equal. In a largely unregulated industry, the quality gap between a well-run home and a poorly managed one can be enormous — and that gap directly affects recovery outcomes. Before committing to a placement, ask these seven questions.

1. Is There a House Manager Living On-Site?

An on-site house manager provides daily accountability, conflict resolution, and immediate support when a resident is struggling. Homes without live-in management often have difficulty enforcing rules consistently, which undermines the entire structure.

2. What Is the Drug Testing Policy?

Any reputable sober living home should conduct regular, random drug testing. Ask how often testing occurs, what happens when someone tests positive, and whether testing is done in-house or through a third party.

3. What Recovery Program Participation Is Required?

Sober living should complement active recovery work, not replace it. Look for homes that require residents to attend AA, NA, SMART Recovery, or similar programs — and verify that this is actually enforced.

4. Is the Home Gender-Specific?

Gender-specific homes generally produce better outcomes, particularly in the early stages of recovery. Ask whether the home is men’s only, women’s only, or co-ed — and why.

5. Is There Clinical Support Available?

Many people in sober living benefit from continued therapy, psychiatric care, or IOP participation. Ask whether the home has relationships with clinical providers, and whether transportation or scheduling support is available. Tranquil Ways partners with Provive Wellness for exactly this purpose.

6. What Does the Application and Screening Process Look Like?

A rigorous intake process is a good sign. Homes that screen applicants carefully are protecting the community. Be cautious of homes that accept anyone immediately without assessment.

7. What Is the Discharge Policy?

Understand under what circumstances a resident would be discharged, how much notice is given, and what support (if any) is offered during a transition. Transparency here speaks to how the home handles difficult situations overall.
