When choosing a sober living home, one of the first questions many people face is: should I live in a gender-specific home or a co-ed environment? At Tranquil Ways, we operate separate homes for men and women — and we believe this structure produces meaningfully better outcomes.
The Case for Separate Homes
Gender-specific sober living allows residents to focus entirely on recovery without the social dynamics that mixed-gender environments can introduce. For many people in early recovery — especially those whose substance use was entangled with unhealthy relationships — a same-gender environment reduces distraction and promotes honest self-examination.
In women’s homes specifically, the benefits are well-documented. Women in recovery often have different trauma histories than men, and they tend to open up more freely in all-female settings. Conversations about abuse, self-worth, relationships, and parenting are more candid when women aren’t navigating a mixed-gender social environment.
In men’s homes, accountability culture tends to develop more naturally. Men in recovery often benefit from shared experiences around identity, purpose, and rebuilding self-respect — and those conversations happen differently when women aren’t present.
What Tranquil Ways Offers
Our men’s homes are currently located in Devon and Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Greenwood, Indiana. Our women’s homes operate in Brentwood, Tennessee, and Greenwood, Indiana. Each home is led by a house manager who lives on-site and provides daily accountability support.
All homes maintain the same core standards: zero-tolerance substance policy, mandatory recovery program participation, household contribution expectations, and connection to Provive Wellness clinical services.
Is Co-Ed Ever Right?
Co-ed sober living exists and works for some people. But for those in the first year of recovery — when emotional regulation, identity rebuilding, and relationship patterns are all being restructured — the focused environment of a gender-specific home provides a stronger foundation.
If you’re unsure which setting is right for you or your loved one, call us. We’ll have an honest conversation about fit.
